What is a certified birth certificate translation?
A certified birth record is an official translation of your original birth record, accompanied by a signed declaration of accuracy issued by an accredited translator. Unlike a simple translation, it carries legal value and is recognized by Canadian authorities, including Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), provincial courts, universities, and professional regulators. The translator confirms that the translated content matches the source document — birth date, place, parents' names, registration number — with no omission or interpretation.
In Canada, a translation only qualifies as "certified" when it is produced by a translator who is a full member of a provincial association recognized by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) — such as OTTIAQ in Quebec or ATIO in Ontario. This is the standard required by IRCC and by most institutions handling civil status records. A notarized translation is something different: it certifies the signatory's identity, not the translation itself.
When is a certified birth certificate translation required?
A birth certificate is one of the most frequently translated documents in Canada. Here are the most common situations where a certified translation is mandatory:
IRCC immigration applications
Permanent residence, Express Entry, family sponsorship, citizenship — all require a certified translation of foreign birth certificates.
Canadian citizenship
When applying for Canadian citizenship for yourself or your minor children born abroad.
University admissions
Required by most Canadian universities and colleges as part of international student applications.
Marriage in Canada
Provincial authorities require a certified translation of foreign birth certificates to issue a marriage license.
Court proceedings
For estate, succession, custody, or any civil case where proof of birth and parentage is needed.
Professional licensing
Foreign-trained professionals (doctors, engineers, lawyers) must submit translated civil status documents to provincial regulators.
Who can translate and certify a birth certificate in Canada?
Only an accredited translator — a member in good standing of a provincial association recognized by the CTTIC — can issue a certified translation valid for official use in Canada. This excludes self-translations, family members, and uncertified bilingual professionals, even if they hold a university degree in translation. Our network covers every official accreditation across the country:
- ✓OTTIAQ — Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec
- ✓ATIO — Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario
- ✓ATIA, STIBC, ATIM, ATIS, CTINB, NSTI — provincial associations
- ✓CTTIC — federal recognition across all 10 Canadian provinces

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a notarized translation the same as a certified translation?
No. A notarized translation only attests the signatory's identity, not the accuracy of the translation. For IRCC and most Canadian institutions, a certified translation from an accredited translator is required — not a notarized one.
Can I translate my own birth certificate?
No. IRCC explicitly prohibits self-translations or translations by family members, even if the person is bilingual. The translation must come from an independent, accredited third-party translator.
From which languages can you translate a birth certificate?
Our network covers 60+ language pairs, including French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, Punjabi, Tagalog, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Italian, German, and more. Source documents in any official language are accepted.
How long is the translation valid?
There is no expiry on a certified translation itself. However, some authorities (notably IRCC) require the source document to have been issued within the last 6 months. The translation remains valid as long as the source is still accepted.
Do you accept long-form and short-form birth certificates?
Yes. We translate both long-form (with parental information) and short-form birth certificates. For IRCC, the long-form version is generally required.
Is the digital PDF accepted by IRCC?
Yes. Since 2018, IRCC accepts digitally signed PDFs from accredited Canadian translators. A hard copy with wet signature is available on request, at no extra charge.
