IRCC certified translation in Canada by an accredited translator

What is an IRCC certified translation?

An IRCC certified translation service is an official, word-for-word translation of a foreign-language document, prepared so that it is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for immigration and citizenship applications. IRCC requires that any document not in English or French be submitted with a complete translation produced from the original document or a certified copy. Summaries and partial translations are not accepted, and every stamp, seal, and handwritten note must be rendered into English or French.

A translation qualifies as "certified" when it is produced by a translator who is a member in good standing of a provincial association recognized by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) — such as OTTIAQ in Quebec or ATIO in Ontario. When a certified translator prepares your file, no affidavit is required. This is the cleanest and fastest route to an IRCC-compliant submission, and the standard we apply to every order.

When do you need an IRCC certified translation?

A certified translation for IRCC is mandatory whenever a supporting document is not already in English or French. The most common situations include:

Permanent residence & Express Entry

Birth certificates, marriage records, and reference letters must be submitted with a certified translation.

Canadian citizenship

Foreign civil status documents for yourself or your children must be translated and certified.

Family sponsorship

Spouse, parent, and dependent applications require certified translations of relationship documents.

Study permits

Diplomas, transcripts, and proof of funds in another language need a certified translation.

Work permits

Employment records, contracts, and credentials are routinely required by IRCC officers.

Refugee & protected persons

Identity and civil status documents for resettlement and protected-person streams.

IRCC's translation requirements

To be accepted, an official translation for IRCC must meet every one of these criteria. We build all of them into each file:

Accredited translator — a member of a CTTIC-recognized provincial association.
Word-for-word and complete — no summaries, no omissions, full document.
Stamps and seals translated — every mark not in English or French is rendered.
Prepared from the source — from the original document or a certified copy.
Independent translator — never the applicant, a family member, or a representative.
No affidavit needed — because our translators are certified, this step is removed.

Who can certify a translation for IRCC?

Only an accredited translator — a member in good standing of a provincial association recognized by the CTTIC — can issue a certified translation valid for IRCC without an affidavit. Translations by the applicant, family members, or immigration representatives are rejected, even when the person is a qualified translator. Our network covers every official accreditation in Canada:

  • OTTIAQ — Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec
  • ATIO — Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario
  • ATIA, STIBC, ATIM, ATIS, CTINB, NSTI — provincial associations
  • CTTIC — federal recognition across all 10 Canadian provinces

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IRCC require a certified translation?

Yes. Any supporting document that is not in English or French must be submitted with a complete, word-for-word translation. If it is produced by a certified translator, it meets IRCC requirements directly.

Do I need an affidavit if I use a certified translator?

No. An affidavit sworn before a notary or commissioner of oaths is only required when the translation is done by a non-certified translator. Because our translations come from CTTIC-accredited professionals, no affidavit is needed.

Can I translate my own documents for IRCC?

No. IRCC does not accept translations done by the applicant, family members, or representatives — even if the person is a qualified translator. The translation must come from an independent, accredited third party.

Which documents need to be translated for IRCC?

Any document in another language: birth certificates, marriage and divorce records, police clearances, diplomas and transcripts, and identity documents. Stamps and seals must be translated too.

How fast can you deliver before an IRCC deadline?

Standard delivery is 48–72 hours, and express 24-hour service is available on request. You receive a digitally signed PDF accepted by IRCC, with an optional hard copy mailed across Canada.

Are translations completed outside Canada accepted?

They can be, but a translation done abroad by a non-certified translator must include an affidavit sworn before a local authority. Ordering from our Canadian accredited network removes that step entirely.
