What "Certified" Means in Canada
A certified translation is produced or revised and signed by a translator who is a member of a provincial professional order or association: OTTIAQ in Quebec, ATIO in Ontario, STIBC in British Columbia, ATIA in Alberta, or another CTTIC member. It carries the translator's seal, signature, membership number and a statement of accuracy. Every certified French translator in our network holds a current membership, which you can verify in the association's public directory. IRCC accepts the translation without an affidavit. A translation certified abroad, for example by a traducteur assermenté in France, must be accompanied by an affidavit sworn in Canada to be accepted.
Canadian French or European French
We deliver Canadian French as standard for Canadian institutions: the terminology and administrative vocabulary that MIFI, Quebec professional orders and notaries expect. European French is available on request for documents going to France, Belgium or Switzerland. Does IRCC accept your certified French translations?
Yes. Each translation is signed and sealed by a certified French translator who is a member of a Canadian provincial order or association (OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC, ATIA or another CTTIC member), which IRCC accepts without an affidavit. The certification statement, seal and membership number appear on every page set.
My document is in French and I live in Quebec. Do I need a translation?
No. Quebec institutions accept documents in French as they are. You only need a certified translation if the recipient is outside Quebec, or if a federal or private institution asks for English. If you are unsure, tell us who the recipient is and we will confirm before you order.
I already have a translation by a traducteur assermenté in France. Can I use it for IRCC?
Only if it is accompanied by an affidavit sworn before a commissioner of oaths or notary in Canada. In most cases a new certified translation by a Canadian certified translator is faster and cheaper than arranging the affidavit.
Can I use your translation to exchange my French driver's licence in Ontario or British Columbia?
Yes. ServiceOntario and ICBC require a certified translation of a licence issued in French, and accept translations by ATIO and STIBC certified translators. The SAAQ does not require a translation of a French licence.
Do you translate Quebec birth certificates into English for use in other provinces?
Yes, including certificates and copies of acts issued by the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec, for ServiceOntario, passport applications, employers and institutions outside Quebec.
How long does it take, and can I get it today?
48 hours as standard for most documents. Same-day delivery is available for short documents ordered before 11:00 AM Eastern Time, and 24-hour rush for the rest. Long documents such as contracts or full transcripts are quoted with their own turnaround.
Does the translator need to be in my province?
No. IRCC and most federal bodies accept a translation certified by a member of any Canadian provincial association. Some provincial institutions have a preference: Quebec bodies expect an OTTIAQ seal, and Ontario bodies are used to ATIO. We match your file to the right accreditation automatically, at no extra cost.
Do I need notarization?
Rarely. IRCC, MIFI, licensing bodies, universities and professional orders accept the certified translator's statement. Some courts, banks and foreign authorities ask for notarization; we add it on request for the fee shown in the price table.
