The certificate that confirms what title you actually hold

A degree certificate is the formal document that gives you the right to use a particular academic title. While the diploma is sometimes a ceremonial parchment handed out on graduation day, the degree certificate is what proves to a Canadian recipient that you legitimately hold a Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorate, or any other recognized academic credential. In several countries, these are two separate physical documents issued at different times by different parts of the institution. In others, they are merged into a single piece of paper. Canadian institutions treat them differently depending on what they need to verify.

For an immigration evaluation through WES or IQAS, your degree certificate is the document that anchors the entire credential assessment. For a graduate school application, the degree certificate is what tells the admissions office that you have the prerequisite qualification for the program you are applying to. For a professional order, the degree certificate is what establishes that your training is at the level required for licensure. A certified translation that accurately reproduces the title, the field of study, the date of conferral, and the issuing institution gives Canadian recipients exactly what they need to move forward with their assessment.

Degree certificate or diploma. Which do you actually have?

Confusion between "degree" and "diploma" is one of the most common sources of incomplete applications to Canadian institutions. The terminology varies significantly by country and you may need to translate either document, or both. A quick way to tell them apart:

  • Degree certificate states the academic title (Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy) and is the document required for credential evaluations
  • Diploma is often the ceremonial parchment, sometimes carrying a different format than the official degree certificate
  • In India and Pakistan, the degree certificate and the diploma are typically two separate documents issued months or years apart
  • In the UK, the "degree certificate" is the formal title document, distinct from a "diploma" which usually refers to a sub-degree qualification

Where Canadian institutions ask for a translated degree

Almost every pathway involving recognition of foreign academic qualifications in Canada starts with the degree certificate. The most frequent contexts:

Express Entry and ECA

Required for the Educational Credential Assessment that converts your degree into Canadian equivalency points.

Graduate school admissions

Required by Canadian universities and colleges admitting students into master's, MBA, and doctoral programs.

Professional licensure

Provincial orders for medicine, law, engineering, accounting, pharmacy, and architecture verify the level of your foreign training through your degree certificate.

Skilled employment

Employers in regulated industries verify your degree before issuing offer letters, particularly for senior or specialized positions.

Doctoral and postdoctoral positions

Universities and research institutes verify previous degrees when hiring postdoctoral researchers, lecturers, and faculty.

Study permit applications

IRCC requests degree certificates when applicants have prior university education that supports their study permit eligibility.

Levels of degree we translate

Degrees come in many varieties depending on the academic tradition that issued them. The terminology can differ widely across borders and our translators handle the full spectrum:

Undergraduate degrees, Bachelor's of Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Commerce, Business Administration, and similar three- or four-year qualifications.
Graduate degrees, Master's, MBA, MPhil, postgraduate diplomas in research, professional, or coursework formats.
Doctoral degrees, PhD, DPhil, EdD, MD, JD, with conferral letters, dissertation defense certificates, and habilitation documents.
Provisional and final certificates, common in Indian and Pakistani universities where the provisional confirms the result, the final confirms the degree.
Honorary and integrated degrees, combined undergraduate-graduate qualifications such as MEng, MMath, and similar five-year programs.
Conferral and award letters, formal communications from the registrar confirming completion when the certificate itself is delayed.

Degree translation. FAQ

My country issues a provisional degree and a final degree. Which one do I translate?

If both are available, translate both. For credential evaluations and immigration applications, evaluators prefer the final degree certificate because it confirms the official conferral by the university. The provisional document is accepted as supporting evidence when the final certificate has not yet been issued, which is common right after graduation. If you only have the provisional, get it translated and proceed. You can supplement with the final certificate later if needed.

How is a degree translation different from a diploma translation?

A diploma is the document handed out at graduation, sometimes ceremonial. A degree certificate is the official record of your academic title, formally issued by the university registrar. In many countries (India, Pakistan, the UK, several European nations), they are separate documents with different formats and dates of issuance. In other countries (the US, Canada), they are often the same. We translate either or both depending on what your situation requires.

Do I need to translate my degree if I already translated my transcript?

Yes, in most cases. The two documents serve different purposes. The transcript shows what you studied and how well, while the degree certificate proves that the university formally awarded you the title. WES, IQAS, IRCC, and most Canadian universities require both. Skipping the degree certificate translation can result in an incomplete file and significant delays.

My degree title does not exist in Canada. How is it translated?

We preserve the original title literally and add an explanatory note when the foreign degree corresponds to a Canadian equivalent. For example, a French Maîtrise is rendered as "Master's degree" with the original title kept visible. We do not invent equivalences, because that is the role of WES or IQAS. Our job is to ensure that the Canadian reader understands what the foreign institution actually awarded.

My degree certificate is from a country with a non-Latin script. Is that handled?

Yes. Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Persian, Hindi, Tamil, Hebrew, Amharic, Greek, and many more. Names are transliterated to match your passport. Course titles and academic terminology are rendered with conventions that Canadian evaluators recognize. University names are translated with the official English form when one exists, otherwise transliterated.

Do you offer rush delivery for degrees?

Yes. Same-day rush is available for most language pairs when your IRCC submission deadline or university application deadline is approaching. Order before noon Eastern Time and we deliver the same business day. The rush surcharge is fixed and shown upfront before you confirm the order.
