Certified French to English Translation

If your document was issued in French, you need a certified English translation for any institution outside Quebec, and for federal applications processed in English. This is the request we receive most often: birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, driver's licences and police certificates from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Haiti, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as Quebec-issued documents used in other provinces.

Certified English to French Translation

The Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration (MIFI) accepts documents in English or French, but files submitted in French through Arrima, CAQ, CSQ, PSTQ and PEQ move through Quebec institutions without further translation. Our translators deliver Canadian French, the variety expected by MIFI, Quebec professional orders, notaries and courts.

Quebec Immigration (MIFI)

CAQ, CSQ, PSTQ and PEQ files submitted through the Arrima portal: birth and marriage certificates, degrees, employment letters, police certificates.

Quebec Professional Orders

Collège des médecins du Québec, Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, CPA Québec, OIIQ, Barreau du Québec and other ordres professionnels.

SAAQ Licence Exchange

Driver's licences issued in any language other than French or English, translated for the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec.

Courts, Notaries, Universities

Quebec courts, notaries, the Directeur de l'état civil, universities and CEGEPs, including Université de Montréal, McGill, Laval, UQAM, HEC and Concordia.

Businesses with Quebec compliance obligations under Bill 96 (OQLF registration, francization, signage, packaging, trademarks) have a dedicated service: see our Bill 96 translation services.

Certification

What "Certified" Means in Canada

A certified translation is produced or revised and signed by a translator who is a member of a provincial professional order or association: OTTIAQ in Quebec, ATIO in Ontario, STIBC in British Columbia, ATIA in Alberta, or another CTTIC member. It carries the translator's seal, signature, membership number and a statement of accuracy. Every certified French translator in our network holds a current membership, which you can verify in the association's public directory. IRCC accepts the translation without an affidavit. A translation certified abroad, for example by a traducteur assermenté in France, must be accompanied by an affidavit sworn in Canada to be accepted.

Canadian French or European French

We deliver Canadian French as standard for Canadian institutions: the terminology and administrative vocabulary that MIFI, Quebec professional orders and notaries expect. European French is available on request for documents going to France, Belgium or Switzerland. The written grammar is the same; the difference is in the terms, and our translators know which ones to use.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IRCC accept your certified French translations?

Yes. Each translation is signed and sealed by a certified French translator who is a member of a Canadian provincial order or association (OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC, ATIA or another CTTIC member), which IRCC accepts without an affidavit. The certification statement, seal and membership number appear on every page set.

My document is in French and I live in Quebec. Do I need a translation?

No. Quebec institutions accept documents in French as they are. You only need a certified translation if the recipient is outside Quebec, or if a federal or private institution asks for English. If you are unsure, tell us who the recipient is and we will confirm before you order.

I already have a translation by a traducteur assermenté in France. Can I use it for IRCC?

Only if it is accompanied by an affidavit sworn before a commissioner of oaths or notary in Canada. In most cases a new certified translation by a Canadian certified translator is faster and cheaper than arranging the affidavit.

Can I use your translation to exchange my French driver's licence in Ontario or British Columbia?

Yes. ServiceOntario and ICBC require a certified translation of a licence issued in French, and accept translations by ATIO and STIBC certified translators. The SAAQ does not require a translation of a French licence.

Do you translate Quebec birth certificates into English for use in other provinces?

Yes, including certificates and copies of acts issued by the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec, for ServiceOntario, passport applications, employers and institutions outside Quebec.

How long does it take, and can I get it today?

48 hours as standard for most documents. Same-day delivery is available for short documents ordered before 11:00 AM Eastern Time, and 24-hour rush for the rest. Long documents such as contracts or full transcripts are quoted with their own turnaround.

Does the translator need to be in my province?

No. IRCC and most federal bodies accept a translation certified by a member of any Canadian provincial association. Some provincial institutions have a preference: Quebec bodies expect an OTTIAQ seal, and Ontario bodies are used to ATIO. We match your file to the right accreditation automatically, at no extra cost.

Do I need notarization?

Rarely. IRCC, MIFI, licensing bodies, universities and professional orders accept the certified translator's statement. Some courts, banks and foreign authorities ask for notarization; we add it on request for the fee shown in the price table.

What is the price of a certified French translation?

$45 for a standard one-page document such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, driver's licence or police certificate, and $35 per page for longer documents, taxes extra according to your province. Upload your document to see the exact price before you pay.
