Certified Contract Translation in Canada
Translate commercial contracts, agreements, and legal documents with the rigor they demand. Our certified translators specialize in Canadian and international business law — accepted by courts, notaries, regulators, and global counterparties.

Why contract translation is a discipline of its own
A contract is not just text — it is a binding legal instrument where every word carries weight. A misplaced negation, a mistranslated time limit, a confused liability clause can shift millions of dollars from one party to another, void an entire agreement, or expose a company to litigation. This is why courts, notaries, and sophisticated counterparties never accept contract translations from generalist translators, online tools, or AI-only workflows. The legal effect of the translated text must match the legal effect of the original in every jurisdiction where it may be invoked.
In Canada, the situation is further complicated by the coexistence of two legal traditions: civil law in Quebec (based on the Code civil du Québec) and common law in the other nine provinces. A correct translation requires not just linguistic fluency but legal awareness — knowing when a French "résolution" means termination and when it means a resolution of shareholders, knowing that "consideration" in common law has no direct equivalent in civil law, knowing that an English "shall" is binding while "will" often is not. Our network of accredited translators is structured around these distinctions.

Contract translation — FAQ
Is a certified translation enough for a Canadian court, or do I need a sworn translator?
In Canada, the terms "certified translation" and "sworn translation" are used interchangeably — both refer to a translation produced by a translator accredited by a CTTIC-affiliated provincial order. This is what Canadian courts, tribunals, and notaries require. The "sworn translator" terminology is more common in civil-law jurisdictions (France, Quebec, Latin America), but the Canadian standard is the same.
Can you translate a contract that has already been signed?
Yes, and this is one of the most frequent requests. Translated signed contracts are often needed for litigation, evidence in court, due diligence in M&A transactions, or for one party to formally understand the binding terms they agreed to. The signatures, dates, and any handwritten amendments are described in the translation, but the original signed document remains the legally binding instrument.
Will the translated contract be legally binding on its own?
Usually no — and this is intentional. A translation reproduces the content of the original contract, but the legally binding version is generally the one explicitly designated in the contract's "governing language" clause. For bilingual agreements (common in Quebec), both versions may be equally binding if the contract says so. We always confirm the intended legal status with the client before finalizing.
Do you offer NDA protection before reviewing the document?
Yes. Our translators are bound by professional secrecy under their provincial orders, which already creates a legal obligation of confidentiality. On top of that, we are happy to sign a project-specific NDA before quoting — useful for M&A, litigation, or sensitive commercial negotiations. Just request it when uploading the file.
Can you handle bilingual side-by-side contract drafting?
Yes. Bilingual contracts — where both languages appear in parallel columns or alternating clauses — are a Canadian specialty, especially in Quebec where the Charter of the French Language mandates French versions in many commercial contexts. We deliver bilingual contract layouts with perfectly aligned text and consistent defined terms across both languages.
My contract has 200+ pages with technical schedules. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Large contracts are routine for us. For files above 50 pages, we assign a project lead who maintains terminology consistency across the document and across schedules. We also propose a glossary of defined terms for client validation before starting — a small upfront step that prevents inconsistencies and accelerates delivery.
