What is a certified translation?
A certified translation in Canada is an official translation accompanied by a signed declaration of accuracy from a translator who is an accredited member of a provincial association recognized by the CTTIC.
This certification engages the professional responsibility of the translator and is required by Canadian authorities for any document originally written in a language other than English or French.
This type of translation should not be confused with sworn translation, which is a different form of official translation required in Europe.

Accredited translators across all Canadian provinces
Our certified translations are produced exclusively by translators holding the title of Certified Translator (C.Tr.) or Traducteur agréé (trad. a.), delivered by a provincial association member of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC).
As a CLIA member translation agency, Certilingua adheres to the professional and ethical standards of the Canadian Language Industry Association, ensuring that our operations, contracts with translators, data handling, and client service meet the expected level of the regulated language industry in Canada.
Each translation includes a signed declaration of accuracy and the translator's official stamp, formatted to meet Canadian acceptance requirements. The certification engages the professional responsibility of the translator and guarantees that your document will be recognized by IRCC, courts, universities, and Canadian regulatory bodies.

Frequently Asked Questions
In Canada, a certified translation is an official translation accompanied by a signed declaration of accuracy from a translator who is an accredited member of a provincial association recognized by the CTTIC. This certification is required by IRCC, courts, universities, and professional regulators for any document originally written in a language other than English or French.
No. Notarization is a separate legal procedure where a notary public attests the identity of a signatory or the authenticity of a copy, but does not validate the translation itself. Canadian authorities, including IRCC, require translations certified by an accredited translator — not a notarized translation of a non-certified version. If you are unsure which one your destination authority requires, contact us before ordering.
For federal procedures (IRCC, citizenship, federal courts, federal regulators), certified translations from any CTTIC-affiliated association are recognized across Canada. For specific provincial procedures, the certification may need to come from the relevant provincial association. Our intake system identifies the correct accreditation based on the intended use you indicate at checkout.
Yes. All translations produced by Certilingua are certified by accredited translators meeting IRCC's requirements as published in the IRCC officer manuals. If a translation we produce is rejected by IRCC for reasons attributable to the translation itself, we correct it at no additional cost or refund the full amount paid.
No. IRCC explicitly prohibits translations made by the applicant, by family members, or by the applicant's immigration representative. Translations must be produced by an accredited third-party translator. This is one of the most common reasons for application delays and refusals.
No. In Canada, a certified translator or translation agency cannot certify a translation they did not personally complete or fully review. For professional and ethical reasons, the translator must be able to personally attest to the accuracy and completeness of the translated document before issuing a certification.
Yes. Since 2018, IRCC accepts certified translations delivered as digitally signed PDFs, provided the electronic signature is authentic and verifiable. Most other Canadian authorities follow the same standard. For some specific procedures (notarial deeds, certain court submissions), a wet-signed paper copy may still be preferred — we provide both formats by default on request.
Standard delivery for short documents (birth certificates, diplomas, police clearance certificates) is 48 to 72 business hours. Longer documents (contracts, judgments, medical records) typically require 5 to 10 business days, depending on volume. Express 24-hour service is available on most document types for an additional fee.
Pricing depends on the document type, the language pair, and the length. Standard short documents are priced per document (typically $50 to $100 CAD per document). Long documents are priced per word of source text (typically $0.18 to $0.40 CAD per word, depending on language). The exact price is calculated automatically when you upload your document — no hidden fees, no surprise quotes.
All document transfers are encrypted end-to-end. Files are stored on Canadian servers compliant with PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) and equivalent provincial privacy frameworks. Documents are automatically deleted from our servers 30 days after delivery, unless you request longer retention for future reuse.
Yes. By default, you receive a digitally signed PDF. On request (no additional fee for one copy), we send an original paper copy with the translator's wet signature and stamp by Canada Post tracked mail anywhere in Canada or internationally.
